Three Poems by Fizza Abbas

I’m an active cow

Waking up from a cozy bed
I always feel like an active cow
I Namaste grass each morning
drinking water from a half-empty can:

Every day
is a daisy day.

I’m a happy, a working cow
who doesn’t entertain strange bulls,
no matter how horny they become.

I chill in MY farm
wink at MY bull
I send him S’moo-cheese
from a distance
but wag my tail as he approaches,
playing hard to get
it’s more fun that way

I lick the walls of the byre
to make it look pretty
to all the other cows
so they don’t moo
behind my back.

During quarantine,
I organized the cow relief fund
and brushed off the tears
of fellow cows
with a dry tongue.

Parabola

I still remember physics class
at school,
‘It’s nothing but a plane curve
that works under the influence of gravity’,
my teacher said.

I did not know curves need an armour too,
often I wondered.

Now, when they tell me the death toll,
I create an imaginary line,
joining the locus of points
but it doesn’t become a curve.

Perhaps the ball is still ahead of the curve!

PIA Airbus A320 Crash During Pandemic

Strewn across an array of homes lie a pound of human flesh. Karachi Model Colony once there was.
The town of happy homies that once emanated the childlike glee now collects the tears
coursing down the cheeks of residents.

He rocks back and forth on the bed of fragments; tries to give them a hug but averts every time
they look at him: his eyes look like a prop flesh-toned with concealer while unkempt tresses
hints of a failed vigilante who mistakenly punished his very own.

The coppery scent of blood invites him to dig in. He looks for signs of life, instead, the debris
from the shattered buildings asks to fit in.

The half-burnt fritters, the alleged meal for Iftar, wails for departed souls that could never taste
them, while he runs away, pleading other areas to accommodate the inhabitants.
