PROCESS STATEMENT – JACLYN PIUDIK
I am currently working on a hybrid project that marries text and image and have naturally been thinking a great deal about the relationship between the two forms. The goal in this project is not to write ekphrastic works, but rather to write into the photographs so that the text becomes an integral part of their composition, so that the text enriches the space, light and subjects within them. I usually start with the image, which inspires a poetic response; sometimes, however, the poem will generate an idea for the image. Sometimes found text in the photographs will also serve as a prompt for the poetry.
Jaclyn Piudik is the author/translator of Paul Celan: The Dark Oar (Beautiful Outlaw, 2024), author of To Suture What Frays (Kelsay Books, 2017) and Seduction: Out of Eden (Kelsay Books, 2022) co-authored with Janet R. Kirchheimer, as well as three chapbooks. Her poems have appeared in numerous anthologies and journals, including New American Writing and The New Quarterly. She received a New York Times Fellowship for Creative Writing, the Alice M. Sellers Award from the Academy of American Poets, and the 2022 Very Small Verse Prize from the League of Canadian Poets.
